What a busy and exciting summer season this has been!
For a year now I’ve been saying “one day I’m going to teach Hanna Somatics in Australia,” and in July I had the good fortune to be able to follow through on that desire. Jo Bentley, owner of Soul Safari Yoga, stepped forward to help produce a Somatic Exercise Coach Training (Level 1) in Adelaide and I taught to an enthusiastic group of yoga teachers and movement professionals.
Tina Shettigara of Yoga Spirits Studios sponsored a sold out Move Without Pain workshop, which introduced Hanna Somatics to her students and the wider community for the first time. I also conducted private clinical hands-on Somatics sessions with people whose functional muscle pain and mobility problems needed more attention . It was such fun to finally put faces to names and meet people who had been learning Somatic Exercises from my book and DVDs!
Hanna Somatics has finally come to Australia!
In August I taught for the first time in the Washington, DC area. The workshops and private clinical sessions in Silver Spring, MD, Arlington, VA and Baltimore, MD introduced me to more people eager for sensible solutions and solid information about how to move well, relieve muscle pain and regain control of their bodies. After one of the workshops, a participant (a Physician’s Assistant who had been suffering from foot pain and limited range of motion in her shoulders) said,
My feet don’t hurt! I am AMAZED by the change in the range of motion of both shoulders. This is such important work!
This Fall begins another season of traveling and teaching Thomas Hanna’s profoundly effective form of Somatic Education: more Somatic Exercise Coach trainings – in Los Angeles, Norway and England, a new Professional Clinical Training in Hertfordshire, England and on-going plans for a Professional Clinical Training in Australia.
Hanna Somatics answers the question, “why do my muscles stay tight and painful?”
What I’ve learned in my travels is that Hanna Somatics, which teaches you to regain conscious, voluntary control over your muscles and movement, is a method of movement education that people are looking for. They’re also looking for simple answers to straightforward and sensible questions that too few medical practitioners can answer:
- Why am I in pain when the doctors say that “nothing’s wrong?”
- Why do I feel 80 when I’m only 45?
- If the doctors can’t help me, who can?
- Do I really have to live with this muscle pain?”
Medical professionals tend to look at their patients as if they were a car or bicycle that needs to be “fixed. Somatic Educators know that a person isn’t a jumble of body parts that move separately. Each one of us is a “Somas,” – a living, breathing, constantly changing system that only we can experience from within. I don’t “fix” my clients; I teach them how to “fix” themselves from the inside out.
My vision for Hanna Somatics is to have skilled Clinical Practitioners in every city. I hope that one day those who suffer from functional muscle pain due to stress adaptation (back pain, neck/shoulder/hip/jaw pain, knee and foot pain and restricted mobility) are sent to Somatic Educators for a “second opinion” to determine if they can learn to regain their body awareness and voluntary muscle control before they embark on a road of drugs, surgery or intervention. I have certainly met enthusiastic students and clients who are hoping that this vision expands.
I hope to meet many of you in the course of my travels! In the meantime, keep moving, stay aware and stay in touch!
